Olympia/Master Paints defeated Magic River by a narrow margin of 6-5 ½ goals in the final to clinch the Faysal Bank Polo Cup 2016 title here at the Lahore Polo Club (LPC) ground on Sunday.
Magic River, having one and half goal handicap advantage, started the final in great style as they slammed two back-to-back goals to take 3.5-0 lead with Alman Jalil and Ch Fateh Mehmood scoring one goal apiece. Ghulam Mustafa Monnoo converted a goal off spot penalty to reduce the lead to 3.5-1, but Ch Fateh scored his second goal to stretch the lead to 4.5-1. In the dying moments of the first chukker, Abdul Rehman Monnoo of Olympia hit one goal off 30-yard penalty to reduce the lead to 4.5-2.
Sufi Farooq started the third chukker with his field goal to further reduce the margin to 4.5-3. Hassan Agha then slammed a goal off spot penalty to increase Magic River’s lead to 5.5-3. The fourth and last chukker was fully dominated by Olympia/Master Paints as they hammered three goals to finish the match as triumphant. Ali Elahi scored a brace while Abdul Rehman Monnoo hit a goal to provide Olympia 6-5.5 lead which helped them win the crucial final and title. Agha Murtaza Ali Khan and Irfan Sheikh were the field umpires.
In the subsidiary final, Guard Group outclassed Noon with a big margin of 8-4.5 to secure the third position. Ahmad Nawaz Tiwana was top scorer for the winners as he hammered five goals while Mir Huzaifa Ahmad struck twice and Taimur Ali Malik struck once.
For the losing side, M Usman Malik, Taimur Hayat Noon and Saifullah Noon scored one goals apiece. Sufi Haroon and Ahmad Khan supervised the match as field umpires.
Faysal Bank Retail Banking Fouad Farrukh was chief guest at the final and he along with LPC president Irfan Ali Hyder distributed trophies and shields among the winners.
