Muhammad Iqbal wins Manzoor Hussain Memorial Golf Championship
Senior professional golfer Muhammad Iqbal after beating another two professional golfers Iftikhar Ali and M.Ilyas in sudden death playoffs won the Manzoor Hussain Memorial Golf championship played at Lahore Gymkhana golf course.
Players including former Pakistan Open Champions and title holders M.Shafique, Manzoor Ahmed and six times National Open title winner Ghulam Nabi participated in 72 hole tournament. Alongside the professional golfers, Veteran professionals, Amateurs and ladies events were also included in the championship.
Muhammad Iqbal during the championship, managed to keep chances of victory afloat by accurate hitting and not straying from the fairways. His fellow competitors Iftikhar Ahmed and M.Ilyas were equally determined and did not relent at any stage, matching wits with Iqbal and as the round concluded all three had similar scores of one over par 73. To decide the fate of the title holder, these three went into a sudden death playoff triggering adequate excitement. In the playoff M.Iqbal remained his steady self with no signs of nervousness and this ability to remain calm and composed helped him to end up as the title holder of the 9th segment.
From amongst the participating amateurs Ahmed Zafar with a handicap of 4 played superbly and won the first prize in amateur section .His gross score for the round of 18 holes was 74.The runners up position went to Nasir Irshad.He scored a gross 77.In the amateur net section Tariq Mehmood won the first net with a score of net 70. In the net category Mian Javed Ali was runner up.His net score was 72. Winner of the Veterans Professional section was Akbar Ali.
Mrs Sameea Javed Ali topped in the ladies competition. Mrs. Maimoona Azam was runner up. As for other prizes the longest drive was won by M.Ilyas with a tee shot of 291 yards. Closest to Pin prize was won by Mian Javed Ali whose tee shot at par 3 ninth hole landed just 9 feet from the cup.
At the conclusion of the Syed Manzoor Hussain Memorial Championship, all the senior and veteran pros were given cash prizes and the amateurs were presented with souvenirs by Shaukat Javed ,Convenor Golf,Lahore Gymkhana and Syed Shagil Hussain. The Championship trophy was awarded to Muhammad Iqbal by Syed Shagil Hussain.
