Army retains National Boxing championship title

Defending champions Pakistan Army won the 36th edition of National Boxing championship with 125 points at WAPDA sports complex, Lahore.

 

Hosts WAPDA earned second position with 85 points while Pakistan Air Force ended on third with 45 points. Pakistan Army grabbed 7 golds 2 silver medals while WAPDA clinched 3 gold, 3 silvers and 2 bronze medals.
Fifteen affiliated units of Pakistan boxing federation participated in the 4 days long championship where crowed witnessed the great show of talented pugilists.

Silver medalist at the 2016 South Asian Games WAPDA’s Ali Ahmed clinched victory from the jaws of Army’s Ibrahim in lightweight category. Ali was bleeding from head as he received a strong blow from Ibrahim in the first round. Ali’s coaches and medical team suggested Ali to stop fight but he continued after the 6 minutes failed conversation between Jury and Ali they allowed Ali to fight despite the strong protest launched by Army’s officials that a bleeding boxer should not be allowed to fight.

Injured Ali Ahmed successfully started the fight as he displayed his aggression against opponent and eventually made a strong comeback to win the fight.

In the Bantam-weight category, WAPDA’s Naqeebullah stayed in the ring for recording his protest against the decision went in favor of Army’s Muhammad Raza but ultimately he had to leave the ring as he stepped down weeping.

Muhammad Asif, the silver medalist of SAF games from Army won gold in flyweight while Sulman Baloch clinched Light-welter weight gold, Gul Zaib earned gold in Welterweight, Zulqarnain got gold in Middleweight, Awais Ali received gold in Light heavyweight and Ahmed Ali earned the gold in Heavyweight category from Army.

SAF games silver medalist Muhubullah from WAPDA clinched the gold in Lightweight and in the Super heavyweight category Mir Wais from WAPDA defeated Waqar Ahmed from Army to win the gold.

WAPDA and Army’s pugilists faced each other 5 out of 10 finals.
President WAPDA sports board Amer Ahmed was the chief guest on the occasion and he also distributed the prizes among the players.

  1. Light flyweight: Muhibullah (Wapda) def. Daud Khan (Navy). Muhammad Naeem (Punjab) and Mehroz Ali (PAF) earned bronze medals.
  2. Flyweight: Muhammad Asif (Army) def. Ameer Hamza (Wapda). Inamullah (AJK) and Noor Ali (Railways) earned bronze medals.
  3. Bantamweight: Muhammad Raza (Army) def. Naqeeb Ullah (Wapda). Amir Khan (Navy), Afzal Rehman (KE), bronze medalists.
  4. Lightweight: Ali Ahmed (Wapda) def. Ibrahim (Army). Muhibullah (Balcohistan) and Naimat Ullah (PAF) bronze medalists.
  5. Light Walterweight: Suleman Baloch (Army) def. Adnan Hasan (PAF). Amir Maqsood (KP) and Sardar Muhammad (Wapda) bronze medalists.
  6. Walterweight: Gul Zaib (Army) def. Amir Khan (Wapda). Faraz Ahmed (Sindh) and Ehsanullah (Punjab) bronze medalists.
  7. Middleweight: Zulqarnain (Army) def. Tanveer Ahmed (Navy). Arshad Hussain (PAF), Javed Akhtar (Railways) bronze medalists.
  8. Light heavyweight: Awais Ali (Army) def. Naeem Khan (PAF). Hamza Butt (Punjab), Naimat Ullah (Wapda) bronze medalists.
  9. Heavyweight: Ahmed Ali (Army) def. Ghulam Shabbir (Railways). Usman Ghani (FATA) and Mehmood Ul Hasan (PAF) bronze medalists.
  10. Super heavyweight: Mir Wais (Wapda) def. Waqar Ahmed (Army). Mirza Azam (PAF) and Hafeez Ullah (Punjab) bronze medalists.
