Sumail Hassan’s Team Places 3rd at DOTA Tournament, Wins $2 Million

Sumail Hassan’s team, Evil Geniuses, bagged $2 million at the DOTA The International ’16 which concluded over the weekend.

Originally from Karachi, Sumail moved to Chicago to play DOTA on faster internet connections and lower pings. He shot to fame by doing exceptionally well in the North American in-house gaming league.

This caught the attention of one of the biggest e-gaming team, Evil Geniuses. He was eventually recruited by the team manager, who himself had been a DOTA 2 player in the past. The rest is, as they say, history.

Sumail Hassan with his team went on to bag $1.2 million at the DOTA 2 Asian Championship, $6.6 million at The International ’15 becoming the world’s youngest gamer to be a millionaire and now finally winning $2 million at The International ’16. His earnings were $256,800, $1.3 million and  $436,180 respectively.

The International ’16 is the sixth annual edition of the Seattle based annual DOTA International event. There were 5 stages, with the Main Event taking place from August 8th – August 13th, 2016. The initial prize pool of the tournament was $1,600,000 but it went up to $20,770,460 ($19,170,460 added) after the sale of TI6 Battle Pass sale to players, with 25% of the proceedings going towards the prize pool.

Evil Geniuses were not an invited team this year but they fought their way through the Open Qualifiers. In the Main Event, EG crushed teams and won arguably the best game of the year against Chinese powerhouse EHOME. Their parade was cut short by Wings Gaming (0-2) and later by Digital Chaos (1-2), placing them third. Their total prize money came out to $2,180,898.

Wing’s Gaming was placed first ($9,139,002) and Digital Chaos was second ($3,427,126).

Evil Geniuses was found in 1999. It is now known as being the biggest electronic sports organization in North America. Currently, EG ranks 2nd in the US and 7 in the world with a 63% win rate in the all tournaments.
