Hamza Khan secures first British Junior Open title for Pakistan since 2012

14-year-old Hamza tamed Yusuf Sheikh of England by 3-0 to win his first British Junior Open U-15 2020 title in just 16 minutes in Birmingham, England.

 

The tears and tantrums of the past few days were replaced with triumphant smiles as British Junior Open ended with a first title for Pakistan since 2012.

Young Falcon Hamza Khan, lived up to his billing on final day of the 2020 Dunlop British Junior Open (BJO) in Birmingham.

The squash starlet from Peshawar, outshone Yusuf Sheikh of England to win the U-15 title at the British Junior Open Squash Championship.

Looking in extremely good form, the 14-year-old Hamza tamed Yusuf in just 16 minutes, with a perfect streak of his own, showing no signs of nerves as he downed England’s [5/8] Yusuf Sheikh 3-0 in his first BJO final.

Second seed Hamza registered a 11-4, 11-3, 11-7 victory in the final.

Hamza is the fifth Pakistani to win the British Junion Open U-15 title and the first to do it in the last seven years. Before him, Israr Ahmed had accomplished the feat in 2012.

Other Pakistanis to win U15 titles include Shoaib Hasan (2005, Aamir Atlas Khan (2004) and Farhan Mehboob (2002).

Overall Pakistani juniors exhibited brilliant performance at the British Open Junior championship. Apart from Hamza’s superb show, compatriots Mohammad Ammad and Noor Zaman also reached the U-15 and U-17 semi-finals, respectively.


“I am very happy, I defeated all the big players. Next time I would visit here to win U-17 [title],” a jubilant Hamza said, after winning the decider.
