Squash carnival: Mobile glass courts set to be installed

As the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) prepares for next month’s squash carnival, German engineers are expected to land in Pakistan today to install the four-walled glass court in the PAF Museum.

The mobile squash court was bought by the PSF after the 2014 Asian Beach Games in Thailand but it hasn’t been used since then. The squash carnival will be the first occasion when the court will finally be used and will have war jets in the background to add flavour to the occasion — previously the glass courts had the great Pyramids of Giza in the background in Egypt.

“The court installation will begin from tomorrow and will be completed in three to four days,” PSF secretary Amir Nawaz told The Express Tribune. “German engineers will be supervising the process and will also teach PAF’s technicians how to install and uninstall the courts so that the next time they can do it on their own.”

Five Egyptian squash players, who are among the top 20 in the world, will be playing five one-off matches with their Pakistani counterparts in the squash carnival, which commences from April 5.

The overall winning purse of the series between Pakistan and Egypt is $40,000, with $8,000 the prize-money for each match.

However, it is yet to be decided whether the entire $8,000 should go to the winner or $2,000 should be set aside for the runner-up.
